Yesterday was also L's first day in a new school, with new kids, new teacher, and new language. When he got off the bus we asked him how his day was. His reply: "It was good." How was his teacher? "Good." Classmates? "Nice." Aha! Now we're getting somewhere! Did you make any friends? "Yes, Nicolas has a DS too and he knows the 'Rocket Slime' game." Did you play with anyone at recess? "Yes." Who? "I don't know."So apparently that's everything we need to know about school. It's "good", his classmates are "nice", and Nicolas has the same video game. I had hoped to get more information out of the papers that his teacher sent home. I did get a bit of information, but only after I sat down with my new best friend google translate. I guess if we're immersing our petit garçon into a classroom with a new language, translating a few notes from his teacher isn't too much to ask from us...
As I went through the papers, I found the notebook that he brings home every night for teacher/parent communication, scheduling, etc... On one of the first pages my son had written something in french! What does it say? "I don't know." Well how did you know what to write? "Well, my teacher said something in french, and somebody in the class told somebody else, and I heard them say something to somebody else, and finally someone wrote it on the board." But you don't know what it means? "No."
This is going to be a long school year.
